wild winter

what's really wild is that it has been in the seventies the last several days/weeks. and it's mid-january - ! but this is texas and we're smack dab in the middle of insanity. i can't really complain. nor can this bride. it was perfect weather for just about everything.

i'm not a wintery kind of girl and i will always take flip flops over fuzz lined boots and tank tops over puffy coats. i get claustrophobic in winter wear. i gain weight. i move slowly. it doesn't make me terribly happy.

BUT these last few weeks have been down right giddy inducing. even considered making our new years day swim a regular thing. brrrrr. splash. smile.

it's officially 2012 in case you were wondering. here are a few shots from our last wedding of the year. first wedding of the year is next weekend. what? it's true. girls will get married any old time they please. take note. and engaged, apparently. oh, girls.

everyone's been saying it, but i'm drinking the kool-aid too: this year will be fantastic. i can feel it. we did our familial good luck dip in barton springs on new years day - polar bear style. so it's gotta be good, right? i'll keep you posted.

i've got a website to update for starters and a vacation to go on in the very near future. not sure where yet. but excited about the prospect of skipping town. it's been a long time.

last spring we had the exciting opportunity to work with emily on her wedding at mercury hall. folk art charming, color punching, ribbon flaunting - that is what this wedding was (among other things i had absolutely no part in. ( beer quaffing). emily was excited about being involved in her wedding. so much so that she has started her own little ditty, bird dog weddings.

emily is chock full of ideas and overflowing with energy and exuberance. she blows it up.

this fall was slow and fast simultaneously. changes burn right past us as time stands still. it makes no sense to me. the year slips by and another one clicks in. there seems to be very little space for *big future* plans. getting to yoga, planning a dinner out, calling my grandma all feel strained.

but i'm trying to enjoy 'the moment'. because that's all there really is.

another 'country' wedding, although not technically in the country. quite close to town, actually. loving me some old san antonio road right now. and more longhorns. inescapable large horned beasts blocking my roadway. sarah even tried to coax one to the window. for all the gasping she does when i'm behind the wheel this one had ME gasping - no longhorns nearing my vehicle - ! i gave it some gas and we burned tire outta there. not really.

in some ways this was a farewell to fall. love that the color palettes this season weren't straight up traditional fall colors. fall tones are rather harsh and strong. girls seem to want the subtle monochromatic look at the moment. i'm totally fine with that. even the flowers seem to be obliging.

setup at umlauf is organized chaos. you aren't allowed to begin until 4pm which is when they close to the public. and then it's a mad dash. every vendor for herself. and then you look up and guests are arriving. it's time to go.

i really loved this wedding. and so happy katherine o'brien was shooting it. something to look forward to on a cold winter's day.

the EAST (east austin studio tour) began last weekend and will complete this weekend. i recommend it to anyone who likes meeting people, exploring work spaces/home spaces, checking out ART and loving on the east side of austin. EAST is fun and vibrant. can you handle that? so exciting to meet my neighbors who are making art right down the street from me. one of which is my incredibly talented husband. if i didn't have weddings on weekends then i would be participating as well. fun! i tell you.

i picked up this cute as pie vase just a block and a half from my home/studio. i love it.

i can't stand it that i missed morrissey as bass concert hall last night. and aretha at moody theatre. what was i thinking? probably more focused on my 8 year anniversary !!! yes, me and mr. foo have been married for 8 fruitful + fun years. can't believe we first became 'an item' 11 years ago - how our lives have changed. things are pretty darned amazing. even morrissey can't bring me down.

earlier this week i had the honor and pleasure of seeing eleanor friedberger at the cactus cafe. she's pretty much perfect.

this wedding was nerve racking. and sometimes the more rattled those nerves get the better. new challenges. new obstacles. pushing the limits.

we constructed succulent adorned grapewood arrangements in golden urns. we suspended large greenery + gold-ery covered chandeliers from rafters above already dressed tables. maneuvering an enormous a-frame ladder around and under and back again. we fought windstorms that whipped and bounced our blooms hither and yon. we listened to covers of 'proud mary' followed by 'hey baby que paso'. and it was all i could do not to hit the dance floor in reckless abandon. truth be told i did a little shuffling between bouquet ditzing. i think the band appreciated it.

it was beautiful + incredibly rewarding.

this bride resides in the uk + recently married her beloved - a real live bobby! she wanted billy balls, which i found funny as i was making the boutonnieres - bobbies carry billy sticks, you know? and then i had to laugh out loud (all by myself) that i was humming along with the beatles as they buzzed in my ear. plugged in.

i'm really big on alliteration. i think it goes back to a newspaper UIL competition i got suckered into back in high school. i had to write head lines. granted i was on the newspaper staff as well as the yearbook staff. i should have had the skills. but with the head lines all i could focus on was trying to make them alliterative (?) ((spell check didn't deny this word so i'm rolling with it)).

even though quintessential doesn't begin with an 'h' (which is what i looked for at thesaurus.com) it's still a bit alliterative. i didn't place in the UIL head line category. i did however KILL it one fall in group improvisation. the three of us were called 'nude girls with clothes on' and kingsville, texas never knew what hit it.

last weekend we had the full on hill country wedding experience, which oddly enough, we don't see all that often. not enough lacquered boots in our inventory me thinks. out to blanco we traveled to set up the reception in an honest to goodness dance hall. they host a dance last saturday of the month, ladies! i'll meet you there! it was fantastic.

ceremony on parent's property nearby. quiet country. to and fro we caught sight of: deer, dead deer, dead deer being deconstructed by vultures, dead vultures, horses, cows, goats (but not pygmy - my fav), sheep, alpacas, roadkill armadillo, a donkey, and miniature donkeys. prettyderned amazing.

we also had the always exciting experience of stopping at arnosky farms' big blue barn. total honesty box setup. i love that. i got some marigolds for $5. i'm hoping they hold out for the dia de los muertos parade on saturday. i prefer this tradition to halloween. plus the parade starts in my neighborhood and ends downtown. love being urban. E3 all the way.

i have missed having sarah work with me the last few weeks. it's been a good long time since i've been solo. while it's been really soul satisfying and creatively humbling to begin and end a wedding on my own it's also incredibly lonely and boring. making peanut butter and banana sandwiches without sarah's enthusiasm and excitement just isn't the same. i have, however, taken plenty of photos without feeling like a mega dork.

i am pleased to say that sarah will be making an appearance this week. bananas will ripen.

our first wedding of the season was also our first wedding at the w hotel. such a pleasant and satisfying experience! everyone was incredibly helpful and genuinely nice. the only minor setback was the fact that the loading dock (shared with austin city limits theater) was blocked to vendors at the request of the night's performer, wierd al. big. time. people.

loved all our flowers. especially mrs sarah.

p.s. 'drip resistant' pretty much means it's gonna drip.

the weekend farmers market is something i usually have to miss during wedding season. this can be depressing when the fall rolls in and temperatures drop enough to make strolling the stalls bearable. and then the spring when everything is fresh and green... i absolutely love it.

i've been trying to frequent the markets during my break from work this summer but it's been so hot and so dry. i'm sure the farmers are anxious for this particular summer to take a hike. on this market/urban farm trip i picked up some tender cucumbers, hard as rock pears, and addictive arugula. the assorted greenery came from a friend's amazing property - a good source for cutting textures.

what i love about the markets, farms and gardens i am allowed to roam is their slowness. seeing the literal fruits of labor is humbling and inspiring. and it all takes time. deliberately planned or not. loved - definitely. it's always so nice to step into that dimension and just breathe a little more slowly. wander with my feet and my mind. take a break.

i don't mean to startle you but c'mon! how often do you see a longhorn at a wedding... or anywhere, really? (um, unless you live in austin). and not just any longhorn - BEVO ! this particular longhorn is an icon. and sarah and i got to sit on him.

about halfway through my photo shoot with him i started to get nervous. he is quite large. so i slipped off and didn't look back. but there are photos to prove that this happened. only in texas.

i arrived at the winfield inn and found the pavilion empty. tables dressed and ready. brisk, gentle breeze. quiet. calm. seriously zen-like. i felt a little guilty knowing that sarah was almost an hour away working a bit more feverishly than i (under the watchful eye of a bonifide Texas celebrity to boot!)*

so i setup as thoughtfully as i could without leaving sarah totally out to dry and hopped in the van to join her. this is what was left in my wake:

the fig branches were borrowed from my neighbor. they were prime and i was lucky.

summer said what ?

having a slow summer has been both a blessing and a curse.

blessings include spending massive big amazing time with both my girls AT ONE TIME. i didn't think i could do it. and now i don't know how i'll cope until next summer. totally loved hanging with my ladies. they are fun, excited little beings and i am so lucky to have them in my life.

and no one got sunburned. pffftttt! to you big fat sun burning bright and long and hot ALL crazy summer long. no need to f with us again. we got this. or we be moving. srsly. and the not raining thing really messes with my state of mind. sometimes a girl needs a little refreshing. we would've taken that hurricane action in heartbeat. something to think about.

i was also able to do a little light housekeeping both for personal home + business. feels so good to purge + plan. feels even better to see those plans executed and completed. but i can be patient. right? let's paint! let's plant! soon...

curses are few now that i think of it. blessings wouldn't have happened if i hadn't been slow. slow isn't a curse but sometimes it's hard to accept and be. maybe the curse is reintroducing a little speed and resisting. anticipating the inevitable wedding rush that is called 'fall' (some like to be fancy and say 'autumn'). but it's only a few months of nose down grindstone action. and i do like the action once it's in motion.

apparently i'm feeling talkative tonight. there is a lot to talk about but not much to say. i like the feeling of 'change on the horizon' without entirely knowing what that change will encompass. so let's take a breather and see what the moz has to say.

my brother has a funny recollection of holding some up to his face and actually pretending to have an old man's beard while on a camping trip once. it was the bad stuff. i think he got the cooties.

it's official - summer laze has crept into my bones. we've passed 100 degrees multiple times already (it's mid-june!) and i'm ready to stop. the flowers have been fast and furious this spring but neither one of us can take much more. we've prettied up over 30 weddings and events this year alone. sarah + i have worked so hard and i believe it's totally paid off.

only 3 more weddings this season and we're done until fall. i couldn't be happier with the results of our incredible efforts. i can't wait to update the website with images from the last 2 wedding seasons. so many great pictures from talented austin photographers. we're so lucky.

my little june bug loves her some flowers. she uses my 'extras' (i.e. leftovers) and conjures up some delicious little arrangements. i love that she loves it.

i really enjoyed this bride. she is extremely interested in floral design and has taken classes and interned with another shop in town. she was really involved with the process, which can be great or not so great. thankfully she had beautiful opinions and trusted us to make it all come together.

this wedding was also special because it was my first after birthing my 2nd daughter in november. i was happy to come back to the flowers again and in quite a style.

constant, melodic rainfall last night continues this morning. dark, dank and dreary. just what our nearing 100 degree days were asking for. this wedding from april was anything but dreary. more local farm finds: ranunculus, anemones, freesia, stock. each one of those blooms massed together can make me completely weak in the knees. most notably a big fat bunch of spicy seaside smelling freesia in yellow or white. lip smackin'.

not one of the brides i've had as a client this month actually lives in austin, tx. it's a growing phenomenon and is no longer surprising. austin has lots to offer those in the wedding way - great climate, venues, affordability, and flavor.

one such bride flew in from d.c. and had an authentically austin wedding experience this last weekend. an intimate and classic affair at green pastures with dale watson supplying the two-steppin tunes. the bride had requested that all plants and flowers used be locally grown. tables featured exotic succulent plantings grown at desert to tropics just outside austin. all floral bouquets, boutonnieres, and tables showcased gorgeous blooms grown in blanco, tx at the arnosky farm. i still can't get over their iris and ranunculus - the heartiest + prettiest i've ever seen! i look forward to seeing the images captured by the energetic stacey w/ sms photography. aimee from clink made sure it all came together seamlessly.

this summer has been a test of wills and endurance. and to top it all off i'm well into an otherwise non-eventful pregnancy. at least there are swimming pools. at least there are sno cones. and at least i can crank down the a/c (for the sake of the stems) and admire gorgeous blooms with stronger tolerances than i.

i was honestly baffled at the number of august brides i booked this year. six to be exact. august and january are typically the s-l-o-w months...the months you can count on to vacation and prepare for crazy fall and summer wedding months. but not so much in 2009 and i'm not complaining. four of these weddings are now complete and some of my images appear below.

It was a rainy afternoon...which would be welcomed any moment in the here and now (please!!). I love it when the bride + groom decide to keep the ceremony outside in spite of a light sprinkling - sweet images of umbrellas awaiting the bride's appearance. Easy and trusting bride from San Diego let me have some fun with the centerpieces; all of which were slightly different and featured fantastic succulents purchased at the local Zilker sale a few weeks prior. Rustic galvanized planters became gifts to guests. What a treat! Photos by Brian Fitzsimmons.
